Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp9 Sections: 165e-166c Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, Eldar, JulieH, Regina We started with a question from Eldar. "How is the fifth hypothesis 'Image Thinking'?" For those of you who weren't at the seminar, Pierre went through all the hypotheses in terms of the divided line. Learning how to think allegorically -- mapping each term (and its function) in the Cave allegory to a deeper principle. The question of the meaning of daylight and its opposition...

Synopsis Another curious and fun Friday night NS meeting with Pierre on Zoom. Highlights Warm-up discussion as folks wander in (mostly with Belinda) Do you follow the practice of Phronesis? (Ancient Greek: φρόνησῐς, romanized: phrónēsis) Plato: Intelligence is not enough: People should also have phronesis. Also Homer: When you think that anything that you can do could make it better, or more excellent: Those two have to go together. Because "excellent" doesn't necessarily...

Synopsis Saturday chats are always lovely with Pierre. But they don't get much better than this. We consider the spiritual meaning of Homer's Iliad with Pierre's careful dialoguing with us, all starting from a question that Maria brought in. Just lovely, lovely philosophy. Keep in mind, as “ransom” is used here, a) it not only has a completely different meaning for the Greeks than for us moderns, but b) also Homer (and Pierre!) take its meaning to an even higher level: The proper/just...

Four of us explore our dreams with Pierre as midwife, as usual. Text of Dreams Belinda's dreams 4-28-18 There were many people in different experiences, there was many things in each experience, if one was in one experience and another in another, the other in the another could not see the experience the other was in, it was like whatever they were experiencing was the only thing that could be experienced, like they could only see the experience they were in, like there were no other...

Synopsis Eighth in Pierre's latest series of Friday night dialogues on Homer's Iliad . Rather than split up our Friday evening into the usual 2-part dreams and dialog, this evening we had three parts. (This is probably due to people wandering in slowly at the beginning, so we had a small group, and just circled around to chat, first. When it became obvious to me that this was turning into a serious talk, I turned on the camera. The mikes were giving me guff, though, so please hang in there.)...

Synopsis Eldar explores a very important message from the Dream Master today with Pierre's help. [This was originally going to be an NSSAT (Saturday morning chat) but Pierre had to leave early today and could only stay for 1 hour, and Eldar had not gotten his dream in last night. So the entire morning (only 1 hour) was just a dream exploration, and I classified it as just an NSDRM. Recorded at Regina's outside. -JS] Dream Text Eldar’s Dream 06.22.18 I'm in this very fun and interesting place...
